Something Dune the giant novel gets different from the David Lynch movie is that the Atreides know they're walking into a trap, so they're trying to win Fremen hearts and minds so that whoever shows up to kill them is faced with a surprise brand new, Sardaukar-quality local army. This includes intentionally playing Paul off as a possible messiah.

In the Lynch Dune this 1/3rd of the book becomes Duncan saying "there are actually LOTS of Fremen, maybe they'd be good allies?"
