A while back I read this article about Japan’s surrender behind the scenes m and something that really struck me was politicians certain that Japanese citizens would just get used to American bombing. It obviously struck me as similar to this bs.

@DrSagan the article made the argument that they were facing a Soviet land grab and claiming to surrender based on the bombs would be acceptable. The big support was how unhurried the Japanese response was, and how this was perceived as just another step up in an already devastating bombing campaign.
But the “they’ll get used to their cities being leveled and their families dying” was horrifyingly familiar from modern day USA; I guess politicians are never that different.

yes this. the first i heard the argument about surrender i thought "this is really racist" and then was gaslit and belittled to accept and believe the rhetoric for years-- until the most recent 8 years dissipated some of the gaslighting and abuse
in hindsight shit like this makes me realise how much of my mind and thoughts arent mine
