crummy musings about history, racism, etc
It still always gets me when you see photos of Black people from the turn of the last century - and they're solidly middle class Edwardians. Or when you read about Cab Calloway's childhood and it's several income brackets more privileged than most of the guys in his bands. *That's* what all the racist crap in the early 1900s pushed back at, successfully.
For a brief moment it's this glimpse of the 20th century as it didn't happen. The closest thing I can think of is watching the Yiddish movie "Yidl Mitn Fidl" where you get to see Jewish Warsaw at its peak, and know that in a few years it'd practically all be gone.
