AI "art" could potentially be sold as a cool TTRPG tool - generate not especially perfect or salable portraits, but that's okay, you're just showing players what the NPCs look like. Yes, that replaces stuff I've been commissioned to do in the past and it makes me pucker.
This unsurprisingly is completely lost in all the whole I AM A MASTER ARTIST FOR FEEDING WORDS INTO THIS PROGRAM WAY OF THE FUTURE CHEAP OUT ON HIRING AN ACTUAL PERSON.
@frostwolf one big issue is it’s not really the AI either. These are trained on a batch of art but some of it’s public domain… and some of it’s very alive artists. Which is uncool to start with but adherents are especially loud about how they have the next big thing, and some users have legit equivocated gradually tweaking appropriate prompts to the machine as *their* art. Like you can imagine that really sits badly with artists who otherwise might see AI as a neat additional tool.
@Leucrotta I've seen some pretty wild things coming out of it so I just signed up. Some examples I had seen earlier were tattoo designs so I was inspired to take a stab at a design I want.
Task failed successfully!
@Leucrotta But I did also get this gem. https://labs.openai.com/s/ZFvKdDLzPXm4UvCsnVbg5ze5
@GraySpots Right. And none of it’s terrible; this would be great for brainstorming composition and color, stuff to riff off of and make it truly yours. It’s very late capitalism in that this potentially really neat tool has been marketed and hyped in almost *exactly* the right ways to turn me (and others) off completely.
@Leucrotta It's definitely not good enough for what I would want to replace an artist. Some pretty basic things led to nearly body horry-esque renditions that had no business being so nonsensical. I'll stick with real artists for anything other than "what weird things can I put into the generator like a corgi riding a narwhal."
@Leucrotta huh, the "I'm an artist for feeding words in" is a completely different way than we think of AI art as art.
Like, we think it's art /by the AIs/ and people should be crediting them, not claiming it as their own.
(Still crappy for capitalism survival, I don't have an answer there.)
