so I was bemoaning with a friend about how the fall of Twitter made me wonder where I would get my news since while random assholes and mainstream media are both terrible news sources alone, together they become better

she very wisely pointed out that sometimes we feel like we need more information than we actually _do_ need

like how much of "the news" is absolutely terrible stuff that I have absolutely no way to do anything about? even if it's a real problem does me knowing actually _help_?

this isn't to say one should stay blind to the world around them, or ignore the concerns of minorities out of concern for comfort, but having a feed of terrible stuff you can do nothing about doesn't do much but make you feel terrible

which when put that way makes me a bit more tolerant of harsh demands for CWs as a way to get people to stop doing that self harm

however do be careful to not begin to see others alerting you to issues outside your knowledge _as_ harm, especially if you're directly interacting

@chimerror I really like CWs as a replacement for LiveJournal cut text, and I feel like having them as an option for stuff simply running long downplays other warnings, in a good way; it sets “I don’t have time to read through this” equal to “I don’t have emotional capacity to read this.”
