longish rant about art, vague leftist anger
Corporations want life to be tidy, in ways that are easy to figure out how to advertise, to play to, to profit from. There are only two genders because it's easier to push stuff that's For Girls or For Boys. The only narrative about being in your 40s or 50s is that you have a family, a house, and need pricey vacations, because that's the obvious profitable narrative. The company enthusiastically supports Pride or does homey advertising for Juneteenth to try and fit the complexity of Queerness or Blackness into a marketing label.
Social media has an aspect of trying to make a convenient digestible form. If someone's got a batch of followers, they're a safe bet for advertising, right? You're coaxed to release "content" in a safely predictable form that keeps folks on site only - so no weird aspect ratios, and short pithy shareable videos. An attempt to ensure artists use X service, and to conveniently reduce the complexity of why art is salable.
Into this comes the additional convenience of a dwindling middle class and abandoned dreams. After all, if MAKING pictures for money is a dream for big studios and a few freelancers who don't wash out, that's predictable, right? After all, if BUYING pictures for money is a thing for companies and well-off individuals (who could be sold other things) then those are easily packaged markets. None of this inconvenient sprawl of small would-be publishers or lower middle class people existing off something other than a predictable 40+ hour weekly grind.
