Wrath of Khan related writing thoughts

Listening to the Wrath of Khan soundtrack, I'm reminded of how nothing in this movie makes any sense when you think about it for 15 seconds, but it looks and feels so right that you buy it. This time, how Federation programs have a "backdoor;" reasonable, if not a mainstream concept in the early 80s, but Kirk only exploits it *after* they've otherwise written themselves into a corner. But there's all the other stuff; the parasite's life cycle which doesn't seem to depend on a predator like you'd think logical for something that really hampers a prey animal; the incredibly dangerous thing Spock winds up fixing, which is for some reason in a clear casing right in the middle of engineering; warships wading through space into broadside range like it's 1810. I think what's going on is that the writing hits the *exact* sweet spot of *possibility*. By comparison to say, Rise of Skywalker in which everything looks great, makes no sense if you think about it for 15 seconds, and yet it doesn't work.

@Leucrotta Hadn't thought about that stuff from WoK (minus the 'nuclear hamster ball'🙄) but ya they don't really make sense.

IMHO ST:WoK and SW:RoS differ in the degree/intensity of their bullshittery.

Like, you HAVE to think for 15s to realize the WoK stuff is silly; it seems reasonable at first!

RoS plays SO fast and loose w/secret planets, sith text, spirit transfer, force healing etc. that it only takes a moment to go "...wait, what?" for all of it.

@GoodNewsGreyShoes I really feel Ep IX is an *interesting* failure, one which I want to watch again, because it completely nails all the candy-floss aspects of Star Wars and yet there's nothing underneath it, there's nothing especially character/plot/storywise that the other movies had. My usual comparison is it's like having wonderful, flavorful icing on the stalest cheap loaf cake from Safeway. And if it tanks so badly/gets things so right, that's worth studying.

re: Wrath of Khan related writing thoughts

@Leucrotta "gets things so right, yet tanks so badly" yeah that's RoS, for sure 😆

Much like Game of Thrones, the disastrous SW remakes are excellent case studies of a studio/directors 'missing the point' 🤔

It'd take way more than 500 characters to start discussing the point itself and how they missed it, though 😅

Something something greed etc 🫠

TBH it's ENCOURAGING to see that such high-budget productions CAN FAIL when they forget their audience.
