As far as the type itself surviving, it helps that it's not iron. Metal type's made with an alloy of lead, tin, and antimony. I guess it holds up underwater!
@electrickeet @CoyoteTraveller Seriously, people have been dumping random crap in the Thames for literally nearly 2000 years, enough that the first/only mudlark I've ever run into, on Twitter, was able to write a whole BOOK about stuff he'd found. Like these folks will wander out at low tide and poke around and they'll get stuff like 17th century clay pipes, Roman glass perfume flasks, and Victorian coins, all in the same day.
