I had something I was wondering earlier today (two somethings actually).

I was wondering if, for people who are religious, they see the deity or deities of their religion as existing solely within this universe and being intrinsically tied to it, or as being somehow outside or above the universe that we exist in.

Which led to the thought of Can a religion exist without a deity or other mystical force governing the world? What defines a religion as opposed to just a widely accepted moral philosophy if there can be religion without a deity?

@ziphi these days I hover around the idea that there’s something going on and deities as thought entities are parts of the overall something, a little like how you can define a region as a single forest or watershed where very intimate connections aren’t necessarily visible, and who you think are the big important trees aren’t necessarily the biggest part of the forest.
