one of my favorite just weird random facts is how Julius Fucik's "Entry of the Gladiators" got associated with clowns. For a while it was a cue to alert circus folks that something had gone wrong without alerting the audience, and in that case the clowns would come out and do their thing for as long as it took to get stuff back under control. (This might not be true but I like the idea.)
