@green @kel@witches.town @kara@occult.camp what gets me is that when Last Starfighter came out, the idea was novel and sympathetic; playing video games was equivalent to Luke being basically a space-automobile nerd in space-Modesto. The protag's family can't see why he'd waste time on this but okay sure.
Now that gaming's so widespread though, the idea's like saving the world by binge-watching TV. And while "white male protagonist" is a bland stereotype, "white male GAMER" now really fails to be sympathetic.
@Leucrotta @kara@occult.camp @kel@witches.town yeah--it's incredibly tone-deaf to play up "white male GAMER" as a heroic archetype given what's been happening the last couple of years, and everybody who's aware of this movie *knows* about that, regardless of their opinions on the subject. one side's going to take it as a vindication, the other as Yet Another Fucking Iteration Of That Same Goddamn Bullshit.
