remember: long studs may not always require bigger nuts

@skolli Long studs usually require careful Torquing. Prone to breakage.
Bigger/longer lug nuts are for Softer studs only. Big And Soft studs are best replaced with harder studs unless elasticity or specific yeilding characteristics are desireable in the application.
Shorter, Thicker studs are best for high performance applications, as they're less prone to stretching and losing torque on their nut.
Any opportunity to use a press fit stud over a through hole stud should be taken, as this reduces overall stud length and allows for precise stud to bore fits.
Stud to bore fit is crucial in high performance applications where radial loads are applied that exceed the clamping force normal. Tapered nuts and countersunk holes are crucial in these arrangements as they allow for perfect alignment of stud and bore, without any chance of stud surfaces marring the mating bore.
This entire schema relies on precise positional matching between mating features. Misalignment may case nuts to cock to one side after torque is applied, causing lateral stresses that can snap your dick clean off.
