in my fantasy setting there's a mythical beast called the Giver of Names and it's only authority on what names are what, and if something isn't happy with their name then they can tell the beast and the beast will issue a new name at their request. From there forward other's refusal to use the new name will make the beast angry and it will eat people who don't comply.

@fluxom_alt The Giver of Names seems like they're also a mansplainer and a 'Well, Actually' type, so they're only sought out for this purpose and isn't usually invited to the local dark sorceress's garden parties, because nobody wants to hear about the differences between Cognac and all the other brandies.
