victim: *does anything that makes the abuser feel bad, like characterize their mistreatment accurately*
abuser: *does what they can to immediately make the victim feel bad so the victim stops*
...I'm not going to say this never happens outside abuse relationships, because I'm sure it's a toxic coping mechanism a lot of folks have acquired from one place or another ... but I /will/ say that if you're wondering if someone is willing to treat you with respect, consideration, and regard? Seeing them act this way is a pretty big sign that they aren't.
