@Gaypow I could get depressingly empathetic with doozers if given the chance.

@skquinn@octodon.social I don't know much about dev myself (most complicated thing I ever did was in BASIC), but I have heard from a friend that he has access to a magic app that never crashes and does everything I want, but I can't get it because Twitter shut down its ability to request third-party access to new users or something.

@Gaypow I accidentally misread that last one as Being A Fraggle Rock. XD
Welcome! 🍍

@skquinn@octodon.social Oh I've only been meaning the technical side here, specifically accessing mobile. The social side is another thread entirely.

It looks like I can do *everything* from Mastodon's clutter-free web UI, and I'm finding a plethora of mobile clients that (while not perfect) are able to do everything I need. I presume that's because Mastodon's API is so open, and it wasn't built to be hostile to developers like Twitter seems to be more and more.

It took Mastodon having such an open UI for me to realize how hard it was to do anything on Twitter. Mobile apps seem to be all crashy and terrible, it's just a matter of finding the least worst for my own use cases. The best I have right now lets me check and post from multiple accounts, plus cross-account rt and like. But it crashes often, I can't see likes, and of course can't see polls.

It's weird in that I've just noticed that in all my interactions with Twitter, access to it has been *hostile*. It's like there's a security team around the perimeter, and all the times I've managed to get in I feel like I've been super sneaky, and a guard change cuts off one path, so I have to route around for another.

@Forgebold Oh, you meant a specific kind of work, gotcha.

@Forgebold That's ridiculous! I'm just working here at 2:30 am on a Sunday.
Service jobs help reinforce self shame sometimes.

(Moved) boosted

I want to spin up my own instance, mainly for vanity reasons, but I don't know anything about the underlying tech. I followed a guide to start one successfully, but I'd have to be a major bother of other people to keep ahead of technical issues, not to mention administration.

@yatchi Welcome to the club! Lovely clouds here to yell at. ☁

@yatchi I jumped to Subway, mainly for a different way to manage multiple accounts. (Twidere mashes them together into one TL)

@eddie Keeping worlds separate is a game I've been playing for decades. Generally, I don't think my legal name is publicly associated with this identity anywhere. Privately a few places I'm sure, when I mixed things I needed my legal name for with my (then only) email address. I've been blessed with not having over-sharing friends who blow my cover by tagging me on photos. So far.

@eddie Good point, but it's not a Mastodon-exclusive problem. I realize you're also saying it's definitely a problem, but not one Mastodon tries to solve. The privacy thing in particular is brought up as something possibly worse than Twitter, due to the open nature of the system.

@salameleon ⭐ Though one minor thing, at least from personal experience, it seems a lot of new internet communities have a subset of furries who are tolerated, and small spaces they're welcomed. So far on Mastodon though, I've seen furries *welcomed* everywhere, not just tolerated.
