There's a HUGE difference between a gift economy providing a pittance of support for the people doing the real work of running an instance, and actually monetizing something for ad revenue. I'm massively pro-FOSS and anti-copyright, but that doesn't negate mutual aid and solidarity -- it reinforces the need for it. @kafzeil I'd worked around the first problem for a while by using third party clients, and I've decoupled enough that the latter hasn't directly affected me (yet). I think I got out at a good time.
