@Trilliant Bit of info: the instance I'm on (awoo.space) runs a bit different than others, in that instead of federation with any instance, it manually whitelists instances. Many of the people here are sensitive to various things, including political talk, abuse, disturbing stuff, etc. So there were certain sources that didn't police users, and blocking those came to be a requirement for federation here. continued
Been reading comments from new Mastodon users and from folks on Twitter who just discovered Mastodon. Some interesting takeaways:
- they find instances confusing
- they think it's important to claim a username
- they're confused as to why there's no "Mastodon app"
I think this may just be a generational gap. Younger folks may not remember a time before Web 2.0, before the app store, before the web crystallized into the few big centralized services we have today.

@MissedMarx I don't know if we have a direct analogue but we do have a rotating coyote @jk
@Trilliant but if you do see a toot you want to boost or favourite there, you can click the time to get a direct link to that toot, then paste that url into the search bar of your home instance's client interface, and go from there.
@Trilliant oh, no, just open it in a web browser, by clicking their name or picture or something I think, that gives you their profile and recent posts. You can't directly boost or favourite any toots from there, though.
