@kara_dreamer@witches.town basically after going through the game killing your way through everything and after finally killing Sans (despite his grave warning of 'going to have a bad time'), you lose al control of Frisk once you step through the door. It's implied that once you make that final choice, Chara is in control. Your heartless killing despite everything awakens Chara's power completely, and Chara kills Asgore, but Flowey finishes them off in an attempt to win favour.

Not a problem! Also I realise everything I said was kind of ...I dunno speculatory rather than actually factual and what you asked, I kinda...got carried away. I have a lot of feels about undertale ^^;; my bad. I'll quickly post what I know about the genocide run facts wise for you after this one ^^;

@kara_dreamer@witches.town by this, resulting in Asriel innocently joining with Chara's Soul to have the power to go past the barrier and carry out Chara's dying wish, to return to the humans. It's stated by Asriel though that HE was the one who held them back from killing all the humans above ground like Chara wanted, so he let himself and Chara die rather than hurt them all, but YEARS without a soul broke him and only once he had a soul again did he realise what he'd done.

@kara_dreamer@witches.town It's implied Chara was... unfortunately, a very bitter and twisted individual, due to their treatment at the hands of their own kind, and instead of finding joy and love and mending their broken heart by finding a family who supported and loved them in Toriel, Asgore and Asriel, it only increased their bitterness. "How dare humans treat their new family like this", sort of thing, leading to their revenge plan, sadly. Asriel tragically was led astray

@kara_dreamer@witches.town Basically through the tape logs you find in the True Lab where Asriel is "heard" talking, and the conversation you can have by returning to the very start of the game in the True Pacifist epilogue, plus conversations with characters and the end fights of True Pacifist, plus Flowey's dialogue given what we know , Asriel is a gentle, kind child, who never ever wanted to hurt anybody, but loved Chara and was led astray by Chara's twisted world view.

@kara_dreamer@witches.town Chara doesn't have a lot of characterisation except in their appearance at the very end of Genocide where they address you (The player, or Frisk, its slightly unclear) directly, and have a sort of...demonic personification... Unless you run with the theory/possible implication that Chara is actually the narrator for Frisk for ALL runs (all the text with the * before it is Chara talking to Frisk, implied Chara awoke in Frisk too when they fell)

@kara_dreamer@witches.town Yes, I believe it's in one of the conversations you have with Flowey directly after Toriel, if memory serves. I distinctly remember him saying how he used to be able to RESET the world until you came along, and now somehow he can't. At least on my playthrough he mentioned

"Oh don't worry my little prince. I'm not interested in Regicide yet! This is FAR more interesting!!" then leaves with a laugh.

@kara_dreamer@witches.town It's only once you attempt to Save him as well that he truly breaks down and relents, but at that point he wants to end. You return him to being Asriel but now he has a soul, he knows what he's doing is wrong and it crushes him. Hence why he can't bear to say goodbye to his parents and doesn't want anybody to know he was Flowey. :( Even he can't abide by what he did without his Soul.

@kara_dreamer@witches.town Without his Soul he can't feel any remorse or empathy or love or anything, it's all hollow to him, which drives him further towards hate and hating both himself and existence and everything, the only enjoyment he finds is in finding new things to destroy and hurt and manipulate. Even when he captures the six human souls it's not enough to grant him a true soul. It takes EVERYONE'S Soul to do it, and even then he's too tortured by his past to recant.

@kara_dreamer@witches.town This awakens Asriel's broken, fractured consciousness, still lingering in oblivion, into the flower, and as he wakes up, poor Asriel is implied to be aware that he feels empty. He lacks a soul but cannot die and end now due to Determination. In an attempt to feel SOMETHING, after learning he can reset the world, he tries to help everyone out, but it loses its charm as nobody remembers but him. So then he starts killing. But again, it lacks meaning.

@kara_dreamer@witches.town Ah right, well... in which case it follows on from all that. Basically Asriel has no soul after he dies, joined with Chara. The two are buried in the flower patch. Due to their joining, Asriel's soul persists on, as does Chara's, what with both being so full of Determination now.

In her experiments, Alphys injects "a random yellow flower" from this patch with Determination, to see what happens if a thing with "no soul" is given Determination.

@kara_dreamer@witches.town ahh, yeah, though NOT in the genocide route as it turns out. It's in the true pacifist run, via text logs. This will get long, so bear with me , please. ^^;

Turns out when a monster is killed, because their SOUL is their entire being , suffused with magic (hence why every monster shows up as a greyscale image in the battlescreen, whilst you are just a heart), their soul is destroyed and cannot persist at all, except in the case of boss monsters.
