While i am all aboard the past few years’ trends of finally calling out abusive and shitty folks (usually cis men), i often wonder what the hell “everyone i ever looked up to is turning out to be horrible” is doing to us amidst politics, late capitalism, global warming, etc

@Oneironott
I think it's ok to look up to our peers.
I also think it's wise to remember that heroes are flawed beings like the rest of us are, and that their flaws inevitably will be prominently displayed...
No one is perfect.
@Oneironott i think idolization is the danger more than knowledge of wrongdoings. "heroes" are merely people
@Oneironott we can have hopes that are tied to bigger things than individuals. i think we have to.
@bug this is very, very true
US Politics
@Oneironott Honestly, I think it's overall a good thing. It teaches us not to assume people are 100% good and pure just because they did a good thing.
That kind of logic is exactly why we have a narcissist in the white house right now. They prey on that loophole. If they make a big media presentation about doing good work and then quietly do terrible things in the background, the cognitive dissonance encourages folks to just assume the bad stuff didn't really happen.

I’m not saying that ignorance is good but i’d be lying if i said it didnt cross my mind everytime Yet Another Hero turns out to be garbage and theres little if anything to look up to anymore besides our peers
