death (hypothetical), sad

you ever think about how, now that the internet can connect you to people across the globe, it's completely possible for close friends to suddenly die, leaving you to wonder forever why they just stopped posting

death (hypothetical), sad

a few times in my life i've considered setting up some kind of dead man's switch to handle this. some kind of program that asks me once a month or so if i'm alive. not sure exactly how i'd do it, i never really planned anything.

in the past it's always been for jokes that, now that i'm more mature, i recognize would be incredibly cruel to the people i care about ("haha what's up nerds i'm in hell"). but maybe there should be something like that just to give people closure.

on the other hand, false positives would be incredibly traumatizing. i dunno.

@monorail I know we've seen at least one service that does the dead man's switch thing, sending out emails to selected people if you don't check in for a certain time period.
