Ellie Bluenote was, about twenty years ago, a minor celebrity in the world of video games, starring in a couple 16-bit platformers that never really got all that popular but paid the bills for a while. Then her star faded and the calls from the studio stopped coming, so she retired from the platforming business and now runs a small grocery store in Elseways somewhere. She has no hard feelings about the old days, and will even wear her own old merchandise sometimes, but at the same time she's thankful for a lower-stress lifestyle.

Not quite - Ellie was mostly inspired by listening to "Birdhouse In Your Soul" and imagining it as a sort of video game soundtrack, and then the thing with the grocery store was based on the real-life child actor who inspired the main character of Kid Kool and then went on to manage a convenience store.
That being said, "retired video game mascot" is a pretty great character trait, so I'm glad to see more. Maybe Ellie and Dex knew each other back in the day, who knows?
