CW request, pol-adjacent

As we go into election day in the US tomorrow, please remember to tag your politics-related posts. There are those of us for whom almost any mention of politics is enough to be a stressor.

pol-adjacent

We may be less active on here tomorrow, or we may be more active as we try to distract ourselves. Politics is happening tomorrow, and it's likely to be a stressful day for us. We've already sent in our ballot by mail, so we don't have anything to actually do, but there will probably be a lot of politics talk.

uspol, +

Today's xkcd is uspol related, but in a comforting way: it's a map of midterm election challengers and chances of success, and it's very blue.

@Vyzie I hope conditions at your workplace improve soon. Sorry we haven't been around to give as much support as we want to; the last week was pretty hectic for us as well.

@Mycroft @Nomaxice That claims to be an unmanaged switch, though? Is it actually a mislabelled router?

@Nomaxice @Mycroft Then we should have a router between us and the network, but how do we get one that isn't too expensive? This doesn't seem like a $50+ piece of equipment.

@Nomaxice @Mycroft We found switches in the $15 range, but I think Mycroft said we should definitely have a router between us and the network?

@Nomaxice @Mycroft I think we want gigabit speed at least, though. We get something like 100 MB/s on speedtest, and we'd like to keep that.

@Mycroft @Nomaxice We have no need for wifi, but we want something plug-and-play if that's at all possible.

@Nomaxice @Mycroft Are either of you able to recommend a good cheap router? I went into this expecting to spend maybe $15 or $20, but everything we can find is way more expensive than that.

@Mycroft We would also have to get someone to explain to us how to set up a router, because we've never done it before. Is it complicated?

@Mycroft I don't know if we're allowed to use our own router on the network here; we'll have to ask.

@nautilee That's very cute! I'd definitely take one of you for hugs.

@Mycroft What we have is a single ethernet port to our apartment that goes back to a router somewhere else in the apartment complex. The switch should be sufficient for our needs. As I understand it, it just rebroadcasts everything to all of its ports?

We've been having some trouble with our wifi lately. If anyone out there is knowledgeable about the details of ethernet networking, could you explain whether we need a router or a switch? We only use one of the two computers at a time, so dividing up the bandwidth won't be a problem. I think a switch would be sufficient, but I do want to make sure. Are there any terms to watch for in picking one?

@pearshapes You mean we've been doing it wrong this whole time?

What's with the rival in gen 2 games? You beat him and then he says "This is why I don't battle weaklings. There's no challenge to it." Is he pretending that he won?
