rly wish masto supported alternate versions of posts? activitypub has the ability to do that, and it'd be useful for all sorts of stuff? like, different languages, and a screen reader friendly alternative to emojo spam

idk maybe instead of hearing "hacker i hacker m hacker g hacker a hacker y" you could just hear "hacker voice i'm gay"

stuff like that

I wonder if there are cis people who feel their gender on the same level that trans people do? I feel like many cis people would have been cis regardless of what society labelled them, content to be what others expect them to be regardless of what that is.

Has anyone ever thought about how ominous the name "Advent" is for this time of year? It basically means "The Coming".

Welcome to all the newcomers! I don't have anything more eloquent to say right now, I just want to make sure people know they're welcome here.

along with the exhortations to new folks to use content warnings, I would like to exhort masto veterans to be patient with new users, and to *please* include explanations of common abbreviations so the new folks can get a handle on them. examples:
pol = politics
uspol = US politics
mh = mental health
tf = transformation
+/- signs = positive or negative modifiers, so "uspol +" would refer to a story about US politics that is actually good (for a change).

feel free to reply to this with other common-ish examples if you can think of them!

It seems we're doing an awoo this evening! That takes us back.

Awoo!

Fun fact:

English has three sets of words that communicate "this place" : "that place" : "what place". Each meaning can be paired with one of three prepositions ("in", "to", and "from") to form a specialized locative word:

"in" - here : there : where
"to" - hither : thither : whither
"from" - hence : thence : whence

So "here" means "in this place"; "thither" means "to that place"; "whence" means "from what place"; etc.

I'm not exaggerating either, it really is just those two words.

Apparently, one of youtube's recommendations for fixing streaming problems related to intermittent internet outages is... "use chrome".

A lesson being taught doesn't necessarily go along with that lesson being learned.

Likewise, lessons can sometimes be learned long after they're taught.

In Pokemon Colosseum, the first trainer you fight has a zigzagoon. Its animation lines up perfectly with the trainer's model such that, when you hit it and it recoils backwards, when it runs back to position it runs between its trainer's legs. It's extremely cute.

:ziggy:

How many grass-type pokemon are actually based on grass, as opposed to some other plant? Are there any?

I hope everyone on here is having a pleasant evening. The world is overwhelming sometimes, so please remember to take some time to yourself, to do things you enjoy.

Who came up with the trainer names in Pokemon XD, anyway? They're very odd.

Using italic text for everything in Link's Awakening is a strange stylistic choice that we've never understood.

I realize this isn't a new take by any stretch of the imagination but it still blows my mind that "Social Justice Warrior" is wielded as an insult because it still sounds like the raddest fucking title I've ever heard in my life

Why is it uncommon to mix pasta shapes? We realized earlier that we've never heard of using mixed shapes of pasta except when out of one; it seems like that would add something to a dish, so why isn't it ever done?
