It's incredible to me that this FF relay speedrun, which has been going on for 48h, has mostly been between 30m and dead even the whole way.

Through weird bad luck like "got oneshotted, saved 20m ago," "necessary item hasn't stopped after 10 resets," and "boss went OOB"

Really not sure how to deal with the feeling of futility, powerlessness and uselessness that comes with knowing the world is trying to devour itself, probably within our lifetime, and there doesn't seem to be anything that anyone can do about it.

I'm still not sure I want to actually write all this out, but more and more, my hot take on typical JRPG design is that the battles are almost universally an anti-feature that just happens to fill a necessary space in the game.

I think a big part of my perpetual furry indecision is that I'm (me, personally) very much a cat person.

But I keep wanting to make that fit into bird, because bird goals. But I also want something I have a personal stake in, not just an impersonal character. I dunno!

Cat is making increasingly sad noises because I'm not giving him food... while he's still literally licking his lips because he was just eating the food I had already put out.

I love my quirky furry baby.

But that can coexist with the fact that I'm so so so tired of remakes and having the same things sold back to us over and over and over, ad infinitum.

And I am so, so, so tired of the relentless, dogged pursuit of """realism""" in visual media when we can do so much more.

Seeing a lot of "wow, don't criticise TLK remake, a lot of animators worked hard on it" - and yeah like, I'm sure they did. And it's technically very impressive looking and they're talented people and I don't question that for a second.

For no particular reason, having a bunch of thoughts about older jrpg structure and mechanics tonight.

Bunch of disjointed thoughts and criticisms probably not amounting to much. Maybe some oddball ideas. Too hard and rambling to put into tweetable chunks, anyway.
