also we recently saw the new Dune adaptation and as a huge fan of the books:
1) I appreciate that it is a very pragmatic adaptation willing to shift around characters to flow better narratively as a film
2) oh good it isn't dipping into Frank Herbert's rampant, toxic homophobia
being a Dune fan and a queer woman is particularly thorny because on one hand, Dune was absolutely the genesis of a lot of important stylistic trends in sci-fi that still influence modern queer media, but also, Herbert's queerphobia and misogyny are INESCAPABLE parts of the text
like, there's readings you can do of the Bene Gesserit and Bene Tleilax that are 'these have a lot of motifs about the dissociation of queer cultures from mainstream norms'
and then there's the straightforward reading where their queerness is explicitly, inevitably villainous
