She always dried herself off from the feet up after a shower, because otherwise the roots would grow too quickly. If she toweled off from her head down, her rootlets would begin sprouting as soon as they touched the matted, tangled fibers of the bathmat. Her feet would mistake their surroundings and all the water dripping down them for a place to grow, to stretch out her own tangles and attach her in place. She would need to painfully trim them back before she could leave for work.
