Just considering that girls are typically the consumers of yaoi growing up.
Maybe transmasc culture would be more accurate, but not all of the "girls" who identify with yaoi growing up end up being guys.

For me yaoi and slash fiction was how I figured out I wasn't a girl. But you're right, they're appropriative and not like male queer culture at all. Hence wondering if yaoi is just... Something else altogether?
But my thought process was, the "gay" identity consumers of yaoi experience are mainly women and trans masc folks, so maybe it's its own thing now?
