I love the school I work at, but boy do I feel lonely here sometimes (I'm the only visibly queer, non-binary person). Most of my coworkers are blonde, skinny, married, and have kids. There are only 5 men who work here and they're: 2 aides, 1 custodian, 1 computer teacher, and 1 psychologist.
@Sparrow hahaha we are like that and the students are literally going to be rioting if we don't fix it
oh god
@somekindofcrow right?! My school's elementary, so maybe slightly less rioting... But then again, I've known very young kids to get involved in protests.
Basically we need more diversity & as uncomf as I feel sometimes, I know being visibly non-binary (alas I am white tho) might help some lgbtqia students and that me being here is important for that.
@Sparrow Like I should be out at work for that reason? But yeah there are so many red flags there I don't even want to touch it with a 20 foot pole. :3
@somekindofcrow Nah, if you don't feel 100% safe don't put yourself in a dangerous situation. While I feel lonely/out of place at my job, I know my safety and job aren't in jeopardy if I look the way I do. Take care of yourself!
(I'm also not Out at work in terms of gender identity. The kids use "she/her" pronouns for me and I haven't figured out if/how to talk to my bosses about using "they/them" instead since nonbinary identities are still a little unheard of. But I'm out as queer.)
There are so few men here that we have a women's bathroom and a single stall gender neutral bathroom.
