On Memes, Birdsite
I retweeted the following over on Twitter:
can we all collectively agree to stop treating these 'unpopular opinion' posts with legitimacy and just mute/ignore them
I hate how everything on Twitter, and on social media in general, has to be communicated through memes. We've reached a point where there's a new meme weekly and everyone has to join in on sharing something they think or feel through this latest format.
I'm not denying that memes aren't a valid a form of communication, but it's obnoxious when that's all people use to communicate. They're effective because of social media algorithms encouraging "engagement", and as memes they propagate wildly.
But also as memes they're limited and samey.
It's entirely possible to share whatever take or personal factoid without flooding people's feeds. (Especially the X Like = X Post types.) People don't, because without the excuse of the memetic fad they understand it would be obnoxious.
Yet it would allow for far more nuance, something social media desperately needs.
