birdsite, fascism

alright i thought it was a bit silly to have "CW: birdsite" on every toot that just said "twitter is bad" but now there are people just straight up posting screencaps of twitter fascists on here

and i'm so tired man. i'm so tired of being unable to escape fascist propaganda because leftists will pass around screenshots of it so i know how bad they are. im aware that's why i blocked them all 8 years ago thank you

re: birdsite, fascism

@eevee I wonder if willingness to share screenshot dunks around is dependant on how much a given leftist feels legitimately threatened (socially, physically, infosec...ly...?) by fascists. Pointing and laughing is easy when you think they're a "joke". Even when it gets framed as "activism".

... or it could be a coping mechanism.

re: birdsite, fascism

@Taylor @eevee I feel the temptation constantly, and I hope I don’t succumb very often, but I can tell you at least what makes it compelling for me personally: it’s a huge dangerous emergency and it is incredibly crazy-making that the population in general seems to think that these people are just annoying or dumb rather than violent maniacs or the command structure for same. The people who follow *me* don’t need to be told this, but what else can I do?

re: birdsite, fascism

@glyph @eevee Sounds like we need the opposite to followers-only privacy: posts that are only visible/etc to everyone except those that follow you.

Japes aside I understand that. It sounds like a "trashed bathrooms" situation where people can only be angry in the places they have power.

re: birdsite, fascism

@Taylor @eevee yes, a perfect description of the dynamic

re: birdsite, fascism

@Taylor @eevee and what I’m saying here is I don’t want to deal with a trashed bathroom either and I will always try my best to restrain myself but I *do* want to fucking break something, really bad

re: birdsite, fascism

@glyph @Taylor i don't know and i feel similarly helpless, but man there are certainly options beyond plastering their literal words directly on the screen of queer folks with no warning

re: birdsite, fascism

@eevee @Taylor oh yeah to be clear I absolutely think it is wrong and harmful and I try hard to avoid ever doing it. I am constantly linking to Jay smooth’s “don’t link to the line steppers” and to Tay’s “you are entering a shooting gallery from the wrong end”, I just understand why it’s superficially tempting

re: birdsite, fascism

@Taylor @eevee there are several lefty people I follow whose audiences are much more, uh, let’s say “gamer-y” and I can tell you that THEIR followers do in fact need to be told that fascism is bad and unacceptable, and so their constant dunk-QTing, while I would not describe it as “strategically ideal”, is more justifiable than if I were to do it. And their gallows humor appeals to my own maladaptive coping mechanisms
