psychiatry hot critical take, maybe don't read if you're struggling

Y'know what I think. The chemical imbalance model of depression and anxiety and other conditions is only marginally less bullshit than psychoanalysis.

Yes, brains have some kind of real differences, and some are highly predisposed to cause badfeels.

But any etiology that doesn't include personal history, social context, and self-narrativization is totally misguided.

I say this as someone taking multiple psych meds.

@starkatt even hotter take: roughly 90% of psychiatry is pure myopic bullshit that at best serves to circumvent the consequences of environmental variables largely outside people's control (loneliness, constant pressure of survival needs, minority stress, capitalism in general) and at worst just serves to make people blame themselves for problems that ultimately have almost entirely external causes/pathologize differences in brain architecture that would be perfectly workable if society actually accommodated them at all

this isn't to say that even in a perfect world depression, ADHD, PTSD, OCD what have you wouldn't exist outright, but god damn if they wouldn't be a lot less impactful and a lot less prevalent

@Thaminga oh I don't disagree.
