@mawr @Fuego Basically; it was a whole new sound made with production methods that people simply hadn't figured out/weren't possible before, so of course it quickly saturated the landscape for a while. Same thing happened with a whole bunch of different sounds (drum machines, 303 lines, sampled drum loops/instruments including a few particularly notorious individual samples) over the course of the '80s and '90s.

@Kavaeric@snouts.online honestly I feel like part of that sentiment came from the 2000s (which -were- pretty lacking in variety when it comes to mainstream music specifically), though even that time had plenty of variety and innovation going on; it was just more in the underground, and before those scenes became more accessible to folks looking for new music but with no pre-existing social connections to them
