I'd seen a couple movies but the first big draw to anime was the movie Akira, which didn't even reach the US until 1989, right before I turned 17.

By then I'd known a bit because there used to be ads for trans hormones in the back of Playboys and other adult magazines that my dad liked.

I knew by age 5 that I was or wanted to be a girl but it was really difficult to approach back then, and any trans instance people saw was always a TV joke.

Additionally, it was the locker room in junior high, not anime, that taught me that I liked both girls and boys.

Mostly girls...

But I do credit anime with a lot of mind expansion and exploration into more mature thoughts
