What if I changed the user icons from being cropped into rounded squares into being cropped into random polygons inspired by the shapes gems are cut into

I could overlay fake shines to make them all look like they were Magic Picture Gems, it’s be super cool

Okay so I had to do a quick test of "user icons seen through gems" before I could go to sleep.

quick experiments on my icon, the first one is designed to fit in the same space as the 120x120 image, the second is a bit bigger and shows most of the icon at full size in its center. Third is sized to put the central image at roughly the same size as it shows up in the current default Mastodon UI.

Also included is a reference image of different gem cuts, I'm going to mostly go for ones with big flat areas of course.

There are three copies of the icon, each stuffed into a clipping path along with some translucent highlight/shade shapes. To make this work I would need to figure out how to programmatically generate a copy of the SVG that replaces the image, and chooses from one of a set of colors. I think this might end up happening on the user's device rather than the server and frankly I am fine with wasting a few of y'all's CPU cycles for this.

@anthracite Ooooo, pretty.

4b seems to have the most icon space, and the distortion looks interesting.
