Does anyone have a recommendation for a tablet I can use for drawing, one that has pen support and a self contained unit (drawing directly on the screen)? Any recommended software for it?

If you are willing to spend more money then I'd probably recommend some kind of Wacom cintiq, with the cheapest one costing around ~700$ (Cintiq 13HD). I don't remember the exact specifics for that tablet though so it would be good to compare the specifics of the tablets before buying one.
Also it's definitely good to watch/read some reviews, there's a lot of them on youtube and they were very helpful for me.

As for the software, I like Clip Studio Paint Pro. I think it normally costs around 50$ but they make discounts sometimes and you can buy it for 25$. Paint Tool Sai is also good. There are some free ones too (Krita, Firealpaca, Medibang pro and Autodesk sketchbook). And of course there are the classics like Photoshop.
@letslai Thank you! I would probably be using Krita for drawing.

Hi, personally I would recommend Gaomon pd1560. I got it almost a year ago and it's really nice and also cheap for a screen tablet (available for ~350 $). It's probably the best one among the cheaper screen tablets as far I know (I remember checking a lot of others for the same or cheaper price and this one had the best reviews)
