Why is it when anthropomorphic characters in a war setting have holes in their helmets for their ears when that makes them all the more vulnerable?

@XerTheSquirrel idk, i think it'd be more important to hear your surroundings

and if your ears are folded under, not only could you hear less, but really loud sounds close to you have an even greater chance of causing hearing damage due to the amplification of said noises
