wait wait wait do American socket outlets really not have an on/off switch? those bitches are live and ready to kill someone 24/7?

@PsyChuan Unless the outlet is controlled by a wall switch, correct. The closest thing we have to an on/off switch on (modern) outlets is the test & reset buttons.

@PsyChuan Also, some americans are fond of daisy-chaining tons and tons of extension cords, splitters, and power strips onto one outlet.

@Zauberin oh, oh no. i was very wary about doing that through ONE extra extension cable

@PsyChuan @Zauberin it's because old houses and apartments have fuck all for outlets and it's bullshit expensive to get new ones installed if you're even allowed to

@synthgal @PsyChuan Mentioned this to my mother, and she says that in a lot of countries with older houses and older wiring, they typically lack circuit breakers. American households tend to have them, so individual outlets usually don't have switches as a result.

@Zauberin @synthgal i know that's not true in the UK at least. circuit breakers are mandatory here. i should know, i used to design electrical infrastructure.

@PsyChuan @Zauberin oh yeah we have circuit panels here, at worst if it's a very old apartment there's a fuse panel but that's extremely uncommon
