Though if you want what I found a telling anecdote here is something from my personal life you should attach a grain of salt to:

Back in 2016 there was a period where people thought Trump wouldnt win the primary and would step out. I knew this woman at the time whose reaction was "Oh, thats a shame. He is so funny to watch"

Now this person never voted for him (honestly I would be surprised if she voted period.) but to me that always struck me as the "Oh it doesnt matter what he says he's just interesting for some to watch"

And for some connecting the antics and statements to policies and actions that actually effect their lives is very difficult

I feel like this more then anything is the story. Like in 2015 to 2020 the Yam drives ratings which drives coverage because ratings are the metric tool to get advertising. There are a lot of people who just care about that at all levels of corporate media. High principaled talk and criticism doesn't get far.

They cover him because he makes them money.
