names?

It's been subtle, but friends have casually been using my stated preferred name more in text chat, and it still feels kind of weird. I mean, in one on one convos, vs not saying a name at all.

I guess it also comes at a time where my workplace is getting shaken up, and more people are calling me by my legal name. Which is fine.

My friend-name is a gift to and from my friends every time it's used.

What would you even call it if you aren't especially fond of your given/legal name, but still want to prop it up and use as a shield? To feel like anything said to or about it is deflecting away from "me", and is instead absorbed by my IRLspace curated public face?

@Mycroft just Shield name might work? I've got the same feel with my given name vs. my chosen/username tbh. Front name? Facsimile name, shortened to fax for kicks? Coffee name, the easy-to-spell alt you give when you order?
