Yes the sight is offset, and the bluing on the bolt is mismatched, but I got practice doing some hand fitting to compensate for mismatched parts, and it might even shoot decently

It's the sear's job to push the cocking piece out far enough to engage the safety.

So either the position of the sear is wrong on the receiver, or the receiver doesn't have the trigger assembly in the right place.

I know I sort of need to shut up about this but it's just so close to working. The safety lever can move when the cocking lever is out far enough: when the firearm is cocked and ready to fire.

But in this case the cocking piece is almost imperceptibly too far foward.

So this Mauser 98 receiver has a trigger on it. After cleaning it up, fitting a barrel and a bolt, it turns out the position of the sear on the trigger doesn't allow you to engage the safety.

Is it the trigger or the receiver? Or the bolt?

I guess you learn a lot buying junk.
