I'm reminded of the Ringworld series, where even though it was a rig and not a sphere, there was more than enough space in the oceans /alone/ to model entire planets at 1:1 flattened scale.
One ocean literally had an uncountable number of flattened Earths, each its own biome and social structure.
On a sphere? Your continents could be planet-sized, or bigger. :-)

@LexYeen Oh, I wasn't suggesting actually making it a ring, just pointing out fun scale differences.
I remember that book! And how ridiculous it got at the end. Did not feel like a Trek universe book, felt more in the scale of a Culture novel (in hindsight anyway).
