something I appreciate from Record of a Spaceborn Few

Pleasant thing: not only is sex work normal and valued in the Fleet, at the end Sunny introduces himself to the class with his name and says "I'm a sex worker" as straightforwardly as someone would any other job. It's not treated even a little bit as a taboo subject.

And sex work is still very much his profession because that's his jam; teaching the class is just a side gig. It's not something the narrative wants him to stop doing.

@starkatt I really loved that too, for obvious reasons. I love narratives that destigmatize it. :-)

(Other examples: The Companions in the Firefly universe, the Academy in the Finder universe...probably others I'm forgetting. )

@emanate @starkatt Licensed Sex Therapy Practitioners in the Vorkosigan universe. :D except I'm probably getting the acronym wrong...

@emanate @starkatt I would love to be a companion toy in the firefly universe. and with pride ^^

@emanate I have some reservations about things in Firefly.

@starkatt Sure. I am not endorsing the entire show, just remembering that I liked that part of it. Honestly it's been so long that even the Companion thing is likely more problematic than I recall. :-/
