My house almost burned down yesterday!

This house has an extension off the south side that was done in the 70s and absolutely nothing about it is up to code. The wiring especially is so bad it's melted the plugs of space heaters before.

This outlet was the 1st drop in the kitchen. All the other outlets on that wall were daisy-chained off this outlet; that's why it almost caught fire. That backing plate must have been glowing bright red!!

Guess I'll be rewiring the kitchen sooner than planned...

@mawr Holy shit that's scary. D:
I...do not think outlets are supposed to be daisy-chained, and I'm not even an electrician. o.O
I'm glad you caught that before serious problems!

My house almost burned down yesterday!

@emanate @mawr electrician chiming in: daisy chaining using the two sets of screws or stab-in plugs is how most circuits are connected up.

Obviously though *something* is deeply wrong.

@starkatt @emanate
We were running a space heater off of the plug I *think* was next in the chain from the one that burned up-- I'm guessing it just couldn't handle the load??

@starkatt
Either way, I have an appointment with an electrician on Thursday- I want better power routed there anyway, and another line besides to run a ductless heat pump in that room. ^^

@mawr good plan!
