Never forget: most of us have been poisoned by a toxic educational system that teaches us systematically that failing at a task or not knowing a correct answer is shameful.

There is no inherent shame in failure, in not knowing, or in being wrong, and we shouldn't actively shame others for it.

Get back up, learn something new, and try again.

@slightlyflightyone@vulpine.club do all the politicians wait until after the midterms to file? Or closer to primary time?

when I first ran D&D, my grandmother, who had bought fully into the IT'S SATANISM hype, insisted on sitting and watching the first session

about an hour in, she threw her hands up and yelled 'THIS IS JUST MATH' and stormed off

Sorry I took down Youtube everyone. I'm restarting the Docker container right now.

@jskellogg@tabletop.social @dapperbear are you sure the uni would be a noticeable negative? IMO, people would mostly skip over the university if its not some big name. If you skip it people will assume you have no degree.

Made my first very own #crochet pattern! And of course, it's as geeky as I am :p

I've always loved the way that ethanol looks like a little creature, so I made an amigurumi version - because why not? Meet Ethan, the cuddly creature that gets you drunk!

Should I continue doing this? There's loads of chemical compounds that have a fun structure to make :)

#crochet #chemistry #amigurumi #molymods #cute?

Not all debates are intellectually honest ones to have

If you come in swinging, saying something like "Academics won't let you question whether smoking causes lung cancer"

Maybe that's because the question has been debated, at the highest level, for decades, and the answers and level of confidence are so accessible that even a small amount of research would uncover them

So you're either a boring contrarian who needs to go to the library or you're politically motivated and dishonest

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Got married yesterday! That was exciting.

Seen on a physics department common room's thumbtack board:

"One electron is physics. Two electrons is perturbation theory. Beyond that, it's chemistry."

maybe Batman was propaganda to try to convince people that billionaires, freed of being governed, would be frontline fighters against malicious actors like organized crime

if recent signs are any indication, it worked surprisingly well

For those that came out for #NationalComingOutDay : you're valid.

For those who couldn't, for whatever reason: you're valid too.

re: US pol

@FinnyLion Calfornia's had that primary system for a decade now, and it hasn't resulted in non-two-party candidates having more of a chance as far as I can tell. We don't have a single non-D-or-R state or congressional legislator.

Parties can't agree to put forth one candidate, because picking which candidate for a party to put forth is *exactly the point of a primary* which is what was turned in to an open non-partisan first round.

re: US pol

@FinnyLion A simpler case. Six candidates in a swing district. If there's two republicans and four democrats: final election may well be between two republicans. If there's two democrats and four republicans: final election might be two democrats.

Basically, it STILL plays out like having two separate primaries, (D/R) where each voter is only "really" choosing between the candidates of "their" party, except then you mash together the vote totals and see which side split votes least.

re: US pol

@FinnyLion California has it, I think? Except for presidential elections. I think it's not very good either - it makes the *primaries* a tactical voting situation. Candidates still affiliate themselves with the political parties, and then you have to vote tactically to make sure that the top-two aren't just the two from the party that had fewer candidates and split their votes the least, regardless of any actual positions.

I blogged...

or

(the second one is actually where I published first, and is __my__ blog, but Medium is good for sharing and reach)

Please pass it around / share / boost - this stuff really does matter to me.

doctor who, no spoiler

The new Doctor Who first episode is pretty awesome. Looking back on it, it did a great job of setting up the New Doctor’s character, introducing companions, telling a self contained story, setting up a longer story arc, AND distinguishing it from previous show runners’ styles. Usually I end up thinking the first episode with a new doctor is a bit meh, but this one was awesome!
