uspol, birdsite
Ugh, I really gotta stop boosting political stuff. I got fed up with birdsite because my feed there was all politics all the time (my own fault for who I followed, obvs). I cleaned that up, spend more time here now, but here I was ALSO getting into the habit of boosting political things and leading my timelines in the same direction.
Stopping that now. Only gonna boost genuinely interesting things about politics, not expressions of anger and outrage, however much I agree.
Oh man, I love it when EFF gets philosophical: "DRM gets made over the course of years, by skilled engineers, at a cost of millions of dollars. It gets broken in days, by teenagers, with hobbyist equipment. That's not because the DRM-makers are stupid, it's because they're doing something stupid.”
(Also this is a terrifyingly good article: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2017/10/drms-dead-canary-how-we-just-lost-web-what-we-learned-it-and-what-we-need-do-next)

<<Hundreds of faith leaders from around the country signed onto a letter opposing the GOP tax plan that advocates delivered to Senate leaders on Wednesday, saying the plan "violates our moral principles of equality, justice and fairness."
More than 2,400 representatives from Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Sikh, Buddhist and other faith traditions signed the letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.).>>
tasty recipes, uspol, resist
Contacting reps can be nervewracking and awkward and I want to make it feel better for people.
US folks, they're about to vote on that awful tax bill that includes an ACA repeal. Contact your reps (try resistbot or https://5calls.org/ ) and if you tell me here, as thanks I'll post a neural net-generated recipe ingredient here just for you.
2017: Our literal *geopolitics* is being influenced by the whims of social media companies' machine learning recommendation algorithms.
Not just this; Twitter's "broadcast likes to followers as if they were retweets" 'feature' has also caused similar events.

<<my uninformed theory: Twitter's 'what you might have missed' algorithm surfaced coulter's RT of the Britain First leader as the first thing he saw when he opened the ole twitter machine on his phone this AM.>>
Reminder: Whenever you go to apologize but then realize it isn’t something you should apologize for and you wonder what to say instead: SAY THANK YOU. Your apologetic instinct is to lower yourself to raise up someone else, and the raising is great but the lowering is unnecessary: Just give them the blessing. Say “thank you for waiting” instead of “sorry I’m late”. It works.
Mac tech coworker tests and verifies the root thing. Says unlocking the control panel thingy with root seems to somehow 'activate' the supposedly locked-out root account, like you can then do a full interactive login as root afterwards.
Is... is this a case of someone wrote 'if (account.activated = true)' rather than 'if (account.activated == true)' ?
It can't be that dumb surely

The right always brings up fake accusations -> the right crafts false accusations. It's a pattern. It's a heck yeah moment that WaPo did not fall for it and managed to fire back but the misinformation tactics described are chilling https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/a-woman-approached-the-post-with-dramatic--and-false--tale-about-roy-moore-sje-appears-to-be-part-of-undercover-sting-operation/2017/11/27/0c2e335a-cfb6-11e7-9d3a-bcbe2af58c3a_story.html

D&D DMing
My party just finished participating in a massive battle against orcs, that went well. But now next session, they don't have much direction. A few leads they could follow, plot threads to pull on. I'm curious to see what they do. But also it makes preparing kinda tough - I'm basically trying to be ready for like four different places they can head. And I've got some themes for how this world works - I can't just sub in the same dungeon regardless of where they're going.
I'm guessing makefile and compile options.

<<This sword is typical of those that would have been wielded by European knights in the 13th century. It was found in the river Witham, Lincolnshire. On one side there is an indecipherable inscription ‘+NDXOXCHWDRCHWDRCHDXORUN’, perhaps a religious invocation. (weighing 1.2 kg)>>

😃 #Mastodon is getting a lot of new users right now, but, importantly, it's also getting new instances. Here are two comics focused instances for #under1000
I want to use Mastodon more, but I'm having trouble finding likeminded people. Hit me up if you like (or make!) narrative driven games/adventure games, or making YouTube vids/Twitch streams about them. Or if you just fancy a giggle. #gamedev #adventuregames #youtube #twitch #narrativedesign
