Watching a History Channel documentary on the Oak Island "Money Pit" (I think @banjofox mentioned it and piqued my interest). Personally, I'm pretty sure Oak Island is a fool's errand, but I like seeing how they're approaching it.

The narration, at least, makes the classic paranormal/cryptozoology/OOPart/mystery/etc. mistake of assuming that no one ever lies, makes up tall tales, or misremembers; if someone has said something about Oak Island, it must be true.

(For example: the "booby trap" water shafts could simply be the limestone base of the island wearing away; there's nothing but anecdotal evidence that any inscribed stone slab ever actually existed; etc.)

Fortunately, the actual excavators/investigators aren't making that mistake.

"What do you think we're gonna see, Dave?"

"Dirt. Rocks."

"Coincidence? Or could it be that the Oak Island Curse identifies and lures its victims in advance?" god damn it History Channel

Oh good, now they've got the ghost hunters involved.

Oh lord, we're into some Da Vinci Code bullshit now. "I found patterns in the works of Shakespeare!"

...I guess at least we know Shakespeare actually existed, so there's actual history /there/.

One of their 6" hoses got an 8" split in its side. Must be the Curse of Oak Island! :mystery:

Good grief, this is Pareidolia: The Episode. "Look at these marks where the shovel hit the stone when we were digging it out! They must be ancient carvings!"
