food, slow cooker/crock pot question

so I'm thinking of getting a slow cooker. the ideal is something I can dump ingredients into, set a timer, ignore for a while, then come back and have food ready. is this how they actually work? what are your experiences with them, good and/or bad? I need information! (information... *information*...)

@green Excellent. Hit me up and I can offer recipes. Just be warned that if you don't remember to use a liner bag -- and about half the time even if you do -- they can be a bitch to clean.

@literorrery can I get liner bags at a grocery store (or Fred Meyers type variety store), or will I need to get them online/from a specialty shop? and is there a website you would recommend to look up simple recipes? I'd like to make something tomorrow, if I can get my tail in gear to get to the store early enough. XD

@green They're available at Safeway and most grocery stores. Check under food storage for "Slow Cooker bags" or "Oven Bags."
