okay, it's in there *somewhere*, but not in any readily findable place. yeah... I'm going to have to make my own online scrapbook of links and stuff, aren't I? :|
fucking
okay new Firefox users I just bookmarked a site and I CANNOT FIND THE BOOKMARK. WHERE IS FIREFOX PUTTING BOOKMARKS. it won't let me re-bookmark the page, it's not in any of the damn folders, it didn't give me an *option* of putting it *into* a folder, it's not in the "new bookmarks," WHAT THE FUCK.
ranting about One True Wayism wrt: woo practices
@kara@occult.camp @thatdelphox@occult.camp heh, I should probably either rant about this over on @Troodon@occult.camp or maybe use this as a springboard for this new DW account I've been talking about so I can write up something properly long and ranty. XD or both!
ranting about One True Wayism wrt: woo practices
@thatdelphox@occult.camp @kara@occult.camp but the *only* metric for whether you're doing something right or wrong is whether it *works for you*. and it doesn't have to have the same results as somebody else; even if it just feels right, or even feels like something you could get more out of with more practice, that's valid too. if something doesn't work, don't force it. try it, but don't be disappointed if it doesn't immediately click.
small drug mention
@kara@occult.camp @thatdelphox@occult.camp so, yeah. anybody who tells you you're "doing it wrong" is 100% either trying to sell you something or make themselves more important at your expense, unless it's something super obvious like "don't take a whole lot of drugs and try to have a mystical experience while driving in rush hour traffic."
@Jacel pronouns hacked out of the rock and not even washed off? I dunno, that might be too extreme for me...
@thatdelphox@occult.camp @kara@occult.camp and this can happen on any level, from the Catholic church down to two people messing around with Tarot cards or an Ouija board, if one of them is inclined to play that game. and of course it's not restricted to religious/spiritual practices, but those already have built-in strong memetic hooks that make status-climbing and victim-hooking a whole lot easier.
YES I HAVE OPINIONS, HI
brainweasels
@Jacel *sends gentle hugthoughts and gnawings*
@kara@occult.camp @thatdelphox@occult.camp from the processes as I observed them, it's even simpler than that; some people want to feel more powerful than other people, and will use "hidden knowledge/mysteries/magic/woo/whatever" to get that power over people. if there's a rulebook of any kind, some rules lawyer is going to try to be the top of the heap by being better at following the rules than *you*(anybody), and nitpick whatever you're doing.
when religions do damage
@thatdelphox@occult.camp @kara@occult.camp ugh, I'm sorry... my experiences with them were pretty light, and while they left me with lingering irritations and annoyance, I wasn't in any situations where things were allowed to get deeper than that. I know people who have been, and... well, let's just say it's possible to be deeply fucked up by *any* religion. YES ANY RELIGION.
@thatdelphox@occult.camp @kara@occult.camp omg Wiccan Fundamentalists can be SO FRICKIN' OBNOXIOUS about stuff, I'm still mildly scarred and tend to have snotty snarl-responses to such things as a knee-jerk reaction. "IT'S JUST A KNIFE. ANY KNIFE CAN BE AN ATHAME. IT DOESN'T HAVE TO HAVE A BONE HANDLE CARVED IN MOONLIGHT BY A PRIESTESS CONSECRATED BY you know what forget it."
basically, like everything else in magic practice, it's as sacred/ritualistic as you want/need it to be. ;)
@kara@occult.camp I've never kept one consistently myself, but it's basically a magic notebook; notes on spells, dreams, insights, revelations, observations, etc. sometimes includes things like cut and pasted articles/recopies/whatever, bits of plants, feathers, drawings.
I did keep one for a while... it was extremely useful to me during a very difficult time. wait am I confusing this with a journal. yes/no/maybe/does it matter?
but no really, all I've *ever* seen is that it's a magic journal. XD
Feeling Dumb (Food)
