cant let a new influx of people go by without tooting out the tootcart
> LEAVE TWITTER
You have to specify a direction.
> GO MASTODON
You have arrived at Mastodon.
The building has dozens of entrances, all with 'official' signage above the door, but with graffiti and stickers and signs all over near them anyway.
> GO TO MASTODON.SOCIAL
You walk towards the door marked 'mastodon.social', and note a parking sign that instead says NO AWOO -- $300 FINE in the typical lettering.
*takes a gander over to the bird site*
huh
why is everything on fire?
how can anyone stand all that screaming?
why do the admins not seem to mind the glaring repeated transgressions of their code of conduct?
huh
*walks back towards mastodon*
[the closer I get, the louder the sound of folks unironically dancing to Spice Girls becomes]

`It's not like I'm tooting,' Case heard someone say, as he shouldered his way through the crowd around the door of the Chat. `It's like my body's developed this massive meme deficiency.' It was a Fediverse voice and a Fediverse joke. The Catsubo was an instance for professional shitposters; you could lurk there for a week and never see two words of Discourse.
@Elizafox Also, many state welfare agencies offer Same Day Emergency Food Stamps. Go into your local welfare office, fill out an application, sign an affidavit, and provide ID and you can get some money to buy food with right away.
(Not all states provide this, and the amount will almost certainly vary, but it's worth a shot.)
List numbers available in most places in North America:
211 - Health and human services
311 - Government and non-emergency information (often serves the role of 211 in some areas)
411 - Directory assistance (mostly obsolete but can be useful in a pinch, may cost money)
511 - Traffic and weather (not available in all areas or on all carriers)
611 - Customer support (some carriers)
711 - TDD relay (deaf people use this)
811 - Call Before You Dig (yes please do!)
911 - Emergency Services
Fuck, in the Soviet Union and eastern bloc in general, something called "samizdat" was a thing wherein banned literature was reproduced and distributed in *exactly this way*.
Before the Internet was widespread, people would get books from the library (from a cranky librarian, mind you) and just copy the pages they needed (or the book) if they needed a copy more permanently and couldn't afford the book outright.
Nowadays publishers are so scared people will do this digitally they sometimes don't publish things online until they don't have a choice dead tree sales are dwindling.
Makes no sense to me though.
