I don't really understand the whole migrating to another server. What happens to the other one? I'm I still able to go though the previous one? Why do I even have to do that to follow other people? I just want to get other content without these hoops. It all seems overly complicated for a casual user. I do like this "site" but it's confusing af and a little unintuitive. I'll give this place a week but I don't see myself using this as much or even suggesting it to others at the moment.
@Widdlywham I've done this once before. You can set up the old account to forward people to the new one so if someone tries to use the old address they'll still find you (assuming the old server is still up).
This process is a little clunky but you should only have to do it if there's a problem with the instance you chose -- it's getting shut down or you don't like the moderation policies.
Given that account migration essentially doesn't exist on any other platform, I am really happy it's there at all. I think that portability is a key feature of mastodon.
